HISTORY OF MANLY
Situated 17km north-east of the Sydney CBD, Manly was named in the 18th century by Captain Arthur Philip after the indigenous people that lived there. Philip stated that their "confidence and manly behaviour" inspired the name for Manly Cove. Originally, the land was inhabited by the Gayemagal people who thrived due to the abundance of food resources such as fish, shellfish and animals.
Scattered settlement began in the Manly Cove in the early 1820s. Henry Gilbert Smith, an English businessman living in Sydney, saw that Manly - with an ocean beach on one side and fine sandy cove on the other - could provide a great "watering place" for the people of Sydney. Smith encouraged the growth of a ferry service to Manly and by 1856, a daily ferry service was in place.
